Fishermen of Inle Lake

The fishermen of Inle Lake are known for their distinctive rowing style which involves them standing on the stern of the boat and paddling with their other foot wrapped around the oar.

Most fishermen wake up at 5am to hit the lake before sunrise. This is to avoid the hit, and to have collected fresh fish to bring to the market during the day.

Every morning before sunrise Shwe Yin Than, goes out to the lake to cast the net and fish.

Extra shirt, box of cigarillos and a watch is all that is taken every day. Plus a headlamp for when it is dark in the morning.

After casting the net, the fishermen will use a large rod to strike the water. This will cause the fish to scatter towards the net and hopefully get caught.

Fresh carp fish that Shwe Yin Than has caught in the morning. These fish will be taken to the market in sold the same day. Shwe will get between 2-3000 Kyat per kilo. (1.5 - 2 Euro)

The smaller fish caught in the net are separated by his wife (Daw La Yin), which they will later dry and sell at the market.

Shwe Yin Than, 29 began fishing eighteen years ago when his mother passed away. He learned from his father, who was also a fisherman at the time.
